How to Build the Brand ‘You’

21st century is the century of brand building and self promotion.

Without effective self promotion and brand building, it will be difficult for anyone to achieve his/her full potential.

But, how do I build my brand? The answer, as explained below, lies in the word ‘BRAND’ itself.

B: (Brand in You)

R: Reputation

A: Achievement

N: Notice ability / Networking

D: Dividends

This can be explained as:

To build the brand in you, work to improve your reputation/character (ethically-reputation is what people think you are, character is what you really are)),

have some achievements to show (work smartly-be the master of your subject. Be the ‘to go to person’ for others in your field),

increase your notice ability by proper networking (through personal contact and through social media).

This will automatically pay you dividends and increase your brand value.

However, be aware that building brand is not an overnight process. Won’t happen overnight (you can, however, become notorious overnight!) Building brand takes determination and focus. It is a long haul process.

May sound too simplistic. But, this essentially is how anyone can build his/her brand.

Does Your Resume Contain These Words?

‘Project Smart English’
Say it Right
Does Your Resume Contain These Words?

We express our thoughts through words. We also get impressed by the words used by the other person. Hence, it is necessary that our CV must contain the words which impress the receiver & induce him to call us for interview.
Given below are few such words which impress the reader. Our chances getting interview call increase if our CV contains such words. The basic purpose of these words is to demonstrate your hold of a particular situation and the actions you took to achieve the result or how you came out of a tough situation.
Please also note that the statements are written in past tense. Using past tense shows that you actually completed the work project or task successfully. Adding some figures and facts adds more impact.
A very important point to keep in mind is that the resume should contain measurable achievements and not feelings, like I completed my project in 50 days (measurable achievement) as against I worked very hard on my project (which is just a feeling).
Given below are some of the words which all resumes must have :
ACHIEVED
Good example:      Achieved the target of implementing the software onsite for 200 users 15 days before the deadline.
Bad example:      To implement the software onsite.
This sounds more like a responsibility. The interviewer is mainly interested in knowing about your output.
BUILT
Good Example:    Built  new premises to convert the study center into a residential college accommodating 200 students.
Bad example:
Building a new premise for the residential college.
DEVELOPED
Good example:    Developed guidelines for 50 users to understand and use the new process.
Bad example:        Developing guidelines to use the new process for client handling.
The selector and the interviewer will be amused with questions like: What guidelines? When? For whom? The good example here answers these queries and shows your output rather than your responsibility.
ELIMINATED
Good example:                                                                                                            Eliminated the use of thick brown tape for sealing the packages to reduce the cost by over 15 per cent.
Bad example:
To eliminate wasteful of resources.
The selector do not know: 'what type of resources?', 'how did your action help?'
FORECAST
Good example:                                                                                                                     Forecast a downturn in the FMCG business because of economic slowdown. Suggested measures to combat it and achieve the quarterly target.
Bad example:
To analyze and forecast the market.
INTRODUCED
Good example:                                                                                                                 Introduced a new process to handle queries from potential customers to increase the conversion rate by 60 per cent.
Bad example:                                                                                                          Introducing a new process to handle client queries.
MODERNIZED
Good example:                                                                                                   Modernized a chain of 15 retail outlets across three states to meet the taste of youth.
Bad example:                                                                                                                     To modernize the look of retail chain outlets.
ORGANIZED
Good example:                                                                                                                     Organized re seller conferences in three cities while maintaining a close co-ordination with three internal departments and four vendors.
Bad example:                                                                                                              Organizing events like exhibitions and retailer conferences.
RECOMMENDED
Good example:    Recommended five new ways to ensure that the company is able to roll out the new version of its 'shampoo' before the competitor.
Bad example:                                                                                                       Recommending ways for the company to launch new 'shampoo'
SECURED
Good example:                                                                                                                       Secured first position in the university while pursuing MBA course and helped the college stand at the top of the list.
Bad example:                                                                                                          University topper during MBA.

Let Go!

Here is an interesting fable on Interpersonal Relationship:
Once there was a hermitage in a forest where many hermits used to live. The hermitage had very strict rule regarding women. Women were not allowed in the hermitage. No hermit was allowed to have any contact with women. Even touching a woman was strictly prohibited.

Once a senior hermit and a rookie hermit belonging to this hermitage were passing through a forest. It was   rainy season. The river passing through the forest was in spate and was overflowing. The sun was about to set.
The hermits saw a young lady standing on the bank of the river. She had fallen off her horse and had hurt herself. Her horse had crossed the river and was grazing on the other bank. In such condition, it was not possible for her to cross the river on her own. If she was not helped, she certainly would have fallen prey to some wild animal in the night.
Both the hermits saw this. However, much against the rules of hermitage and to utter shock and surprise of rookie hermit, the senior hermit picked up the young lady, carried her across the river, put her on her horse and saw her on her way safely. Both the hermits carried on their way after this,
Though the rookie hermit was extremely angry at the senior hermit as the senior hermit had broken a strict rule of the hermitage, he could say nothing to the senior hermit. But he was seething with anger at the senior hermit for violating a strict rule of the hermitage.
They continued walking. After walking for about ten miles the junior hermit could contain himself no longer and he burst out at the senior hermit and said, ‘Master, you have violated a very sacred rule of the hermitage. I am going to complain against you when we reach back.’
‘Which rule have I broken?’ asked the senior hermit.
‘You have not only touched a woman, you even lifted her and carried her across the river.’ Said the rookie hermit.
‘But, I put her down ten miles from here and you are still carrying her with you!’ said the great master.
How many times do we carry with us what somebody said days, months or even years back? And, what do we carry with us? Do we carry pleasant things which the other person said about us or we carry only unpleasant things which the other person said about us?
We remember exact (unpleasant) words which the other person said to us years back and never have normal pleasant relationship with the other person after this. Do we also remember what pleasant words   somebody else had spoken to us on the same day? Do we also remember which clothes we were wearing on that day or what food we had on that day?
We never forget and let go of the unpleasant things which somebody had said even years back, always carry this in our mind and allow this to spoil our relationship for years on end.

What if we learn to just let go of negative thoughts.  Won’t our lives be better and more harmonious if we just let go?
Something for all of us to think about.

A washer man and his five donkeys (How real are our boundaries?)

A washer man and his five donkeys
 (How real are our boundaries?)
Faced with a difficult situation, most of us get busy thinking about why we cannot overcome that difficulty. Mostly we think more about what additional difficulty we will face in trying to overcome the difficult situation. Hence, we stop taking any action, make many compromises   and just live with the problem.
But, how real are these difficulties? Please read this story of ‘Washer man and his five Donkeys’ to know how real are many of our problems.

Once there was a washer man who had five donkeys. Every day in the morning, he will load his donkeys with the clothes he had to wash, take these donkeys to a river, spend his day washing the clothes, load the donkeys again in the evening with washed clothes and come back home.
During the day time he will tie his donkeys by their legs with ropes to a tree   which he will bring with him in the morning.
Many times in the evening he will stop at a tavern, have a drink or two before going home. On the days when he will reach home drunk, his wife will get angry at him.
On one such occasion when he reached home extra drunk, his wife had a big fight with him. Next day morning when he got up, he was very upset. He loaded the donkeys hurriedly and left for the river for his day’s work.
However, when he reached the river he realized that he had brought only four ropes for five donkeys. Obviously, it was not possible to tie five donkeys to the tree with four ropes.  He was standing and thinking about this problem when a wise man passed that way.
The wise man saw the washer man who was worrying about this problem and asked the washer man about his problem.
The washer man explained his problem to the wise man.
“To which tree do you tie your donkeys” Asked the Wise man.
The washer man showed the tree to the Wise man.
“Tie four donkeys to the tree with ropes. For fifth donkey, simply do the action of tying it to the tree. Go and do your work without any worry.” Said the wise man.
“What do you mean? The fifth donkey will simply run away in two minutes!” Protested the washer man.
“Don’t worry. Have faith in me and do what I tell you. Take it from me that your fifth donkey will not run away. You will find it where ever you will leave it.” Advised the Wise man.
So, much against his judgment, the washer man tied four donkeys to the regular tree. He just did the action of tying the fifth donkey to the tree and went away to complete his work.
And; he was surprised to find that as the wise man had said, all the five donkeys, including one which was not tied, were under the usual tree. He loaded the donkeys, untied the tied donkeys and prodded them to start walking.
But, now a new problem arose.
The four donkeys which had been tied with ropes started moving, but the one which was not tied will not move. The washer man tried all tricks including beating the donkey but the donkey will not move!
He was standing near the tree and thinking about what to do when the wise man passed that way again.
“What problem you have created for me! O Wise man cried the washer man! The fifth donkey is not even budging from its position. Please tell me what I should do.”
“Have you un tied the donkey?” Asked the wise man.
“What do you mean untied it? As you had suggested, I never tied it.” Said the washer man.
“The rope, my dear friend, is not tied to the leg of your donkey.  It is tied in its mind. Hence, as you had done the action of tying it in the morning, until you do the action of untying, it will not move.” Said the wise man.
So the washer just did the action of untying the donkey and it started moving immediately.

How many imaginary ropes and chains are we carrying in our mind? How many of these chains are real and how many of these chains are imaginary; like the donkey had?
The honest answer is that most of the our chains(problems) are just imaginary. Only very few are real chains (problems). But the tragedy is that it is not the real chains which hold us back but these imaginary chains  which are real cause of our failures and not meeting most of our challenges head on.
Isn’t it!
