What Good did You do Today? an inspirational story

What Good did You do Today? an inspirational story
(What goes around comes around)
It was 1892. An 18-year-old student at Stanford University was struggling to pay his fees. He was an orphan, and not knowing where to turn for money, came up with a bright idea. He and one of his friend decided to host a musical concert on campus to raise money for their education.
They approached the great pianist Ignacy J. Paderewski. His manager demanded a guaranteed fee of $2000 for the piano recital. A deal was struck and the boys began to work to make the concert a success.
But unfortunately, they could not manage to sell enough tickets. Their total collection was only $1600.
And, the big day arrived.
Disappointed and apprehensive they went to Paderewski and explained their situation. They gave him their total collection of $1600, plus a cheque for the balance $400. They promised to pay the balance as soon as possible.
“No,” said Paderewski. “This is not acceptable.”
The students now were truly in a fix as to what the great musician would do.
However much to their surprise and relief, Paderewski tore up the cheque, returned the $1600 and told the two boys:
“Here’s the $1600.  Deduct whatever expenses you have incurred. Keep the money you need for your fees. And just give me whatever is left,” Said the great man.

It was a small act of kindness. But it clearly marked out Paderewski as a great human being.

The boys had no words to thank Paderewski.
Paderewski later went on to become the Prime Minister of Poland. He was a great leader, but unfortunately when the World War began, Poland was ravaged. There were more than 1.5 million people starving in his country, and no money to feed them. Paderewski did not know where to turn for help. He reached out to the US Food and Relief Administration for help.
The head there was a man called Herbert Hoover — who later went on to become the US President. Hoover agreed to help and quickly shipped tons of food grains to feed the starving Polish people.
A calamity was averted. Paderewski was relieved. He decided to meet Hoover and thank him personally.

When Paderewski began to thank Hoover for his noble gesture, Hoover quickly interjected and said, “You shouldn't be thanking me Mr. Prime Minister. You may not remember this, but several years ago, you helped two young students go through college. I was one of them.”

But, the real question is:
Why did Paderewski help two people he did not even know? We all come across situations like these in our lives. And most of us only think “If I help them, what would happen to me?”

The truly great people think, “If I don’t help them, what will happen to them?” They don’t do it expecting something in return. They do it because they feel it’s the right thing to do. They do it because it is a good thing to do.

So my dear friend,

what good did you do today?

PAID IN FULL FOR A GLASS OF MILK (An inspirational story)

PAID IN FULL FOR A GLASS OF MILK (An inspirational story)

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left. And he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house.
He knocked at a door. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a glass of water. The girl thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk.
He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,”she replied.

“Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”

He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt strong physically, but his faith in God and man also became stronger. He had been ready to give up and quit. But, now he started to study and work even harder.
Eventually, he graduated as a doctor and started working in a hospital.
One day a young lady, who was suffering from a rare illness was admitted to his hospital. The local doctors of her town were baffled. They were unable to diagnose her illness. So, they finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.
Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once as the girl who had given him a glass of milk years back.  He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. The lady was cured.
On the day of her discharge the hospital sent across her bill for settlement. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she opened the envelope and looked at it.  Something caught her attention and tears started falling from her eyes.

On the side of the bill Dr. Kelly had written:

“Paid in full for a glass of milk”

Always keep in mind that what goes around comes around. Hence, never hesitate to do good to others. So a question for you for today:

What good did you do today?

ART of ASKING QUESTIONS

ART of ASKING QUESTIONS

We have to many times in a day in our professional and personal lives ask questions and also answer questions. How should I frame my question so that I get proper reply? And also, what care should I take while answering a question? This post is an attempt to answer these questions. But, first of all: Why ask questions? Questions help us in many ways:
1.    They help us to learn new things
2.    They help us to build new relationship
3.    They help us in coaching & mentoring
4.    They help us to avoid misunderstanding
5.    They help us to defuse a difficult situation
6.    They help us to persuade people

And, how many types of questions are there

Though there are some seven types of questions, but mainly we use three types of question the most.
1.    Close ended questions
2.    Choice Questions
3.    Open ended questions

CLOSE ENDED QUESTIONS

Answer to Closed Probe Question is usually YES     OR     NO or a short factual answer.

Examples

·         Will you come for a movie with me? Answer is "Yes" or "No"
·         Are you going to Delhi? Again the answer is "Yes" or "No"
·         "Are you thirsty?"  The answer is "Yes" or "No";
·         "Where do you work?"  The answer is generally the name of your office.
Close ended questions are formed by using auxiliary verbs or model auxiliaries.
(Is, are, am, was, were, can could, have, has, had, do, does, did, may, might, shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, must, ought,)

Closed questions are good for testing your or the other person's understanding:

"So, if I finish this work, will I get a day off?"

Concluding a discussion or making a decision:

"Now that we all agree on this, should we implement this project?

CHOICE QUESTIONS
We give a choice of two or more alternatives

·         Would you like play ‘football’ or ‘cricket’?
·         Do you like to watch TV or read a book?
Choice questions are also formed by using auxiliary verbs or model auxiliaries (Is, are, am, was, were, can could, have, has, had, do, does, did, may, might, shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, must, ought,) but they provide a choice.
Choice Questions are:
·         good for giving the other person a choice between two or more alternatives,
·         Carrying on the discussion further

OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS

Allow the other person express his/her opinion or thoughts. Open ended question are formed using ‘wh’ (who, what, why, when, where, how)  words like tell me or, describe can also be used for framing open Ended Questions.
·         What is your opinion on the new accounting procedure?
·         How do you think this program will benefit you?
·         Describe what you saw in the road accident
·         What happened at the meeting?
·         Why did he react that way?
·         How was the party?
·         Tell me what happened next.
·         Describe the circumstances in more detail.

Open questions are good for:

Developing an open conversation:                                                                                   "What did you do during the vacation?"
Finding out more detail:                                                                                             "What else do we need to do to succeed?"
Finding out the other person's opinion:                                                                        "What do you think about those changes?"

STEPS FOR PROPER RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS

·         Wait for answer
·         Listen to the answer.
·         Repeat / rephrase question if not answered.
·         Ask only one more question for clarity.
·         Acknowledge & thank.
Of course, the speaker always knows what type of response she/he wants. Hence, we must always take care to frame our question accordingly.

Hence, to sum up:

1.  Close ended questions are good for confirmation,

2.  Open ended questions are good for additional details/information,

3.  Choice questions are good for decision.

TIPS FOR JOB CHANGE

TIPS  FOR JOB CHANGE

Every person working in any organization wants to secure a better job than his existing job. And; you have received a job offer for your dream job.  Sometimes changing a job also may become necessary due to circumstances. Don’t let your dream turn into a nightmare for your current employer.

Given below are some highly useful steps which must be kept in mind before joining the new job.

§  RESUME UPDATE:
Review & revive your resume at regular interval; preferably once every six months. This will enable you to start responding to opportunities as they arise. It will also enable the prospective employer to gauge your suitability for the job more accurately.

§  LOOK IN & OUT:
Consider an internal job change if your current position is not satisfactory. Leaving your current employer may not be the best decision, especially during high unemployment phase. It pays to be flexible & look for job both within the organization as well as outside. Think about changing your responsibilities or asking for a transfer to a new department. It may be far easier than getting a new job.

§  CONSIDER QUALITY:
When evaluating new opportunities, it is not always the remuneration, which is important. You should look for challenges too. New position should allow opportunities for additional challenges, as well as possibilities to serve customer, corporate & communities better. This will be beneficial in long run for career advancement. This point is very useful especially for fresh graduates.

§  FIND A SHOULDER:
Advice from right mentor can help one to locate mange & evaluate opportunities. Discuss your job related issues with your mentor before deciding to move out.

§  MAKE IT SMOOTH:
If you find a new position, make the transition trouble free for your current employer. Clean up the mess if any. Offer to train your replacement. Be available for assistance after your departure. Thank your current employer for the experience. Leave on a positive note. This will enhance your future career options. Leaving abruptly without any notice will deprive one of good references in case your current employer decides to contact your previous employer. Please remember that for any employee best references are always from previous employer.
